Driver's License

Submitted by harry on Wed, 07/09/2008 - 23:00

There are a number of purposes’ for someone to steal your identity to use to get a license or photo ID card.  It could be an illegal immigrant who needs validation of residency or someone who wants to sell false IDs for others on the black market.  Whatever the case may be, these are the steps to take to regain your identity.

1. Contact your Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to verify your concerns

2. If the concerns are legitimate, you can request another number to be substituted for your current number.  Some states use your social security number to as your license number, but you'll have to get it changed to a random number to keep your identity secure.

3. You can also report this incident to your local police as an Identity Theft Report.  They will handle the rest from there.

4. When reporting the fraud, please try to include the victim's name, date of birth, driver's license or identification card number, social security number, and contact information.  Moreover, if you are not the victim, you should include your contact information.  In addition, any information you have about the suspect would be very helpful.

The Department of Driver Services helps protect you from any case of driver's license fraud.  In order to help restrict the amount of frauds, the DDS has required certain documents to be presented to prove a person’s identity.

Do not mistake a fake ID or a ticket fraud for a fraudulent driver's license.  The DMV issues both of these cards, which often times can look fairly similar.  Fake IDs are still a crime as well as fraudulent driver’s licenses, but the DDS does not help resolve these issues unless they were responsible for issuing such an ID.  They will, however, work with local law enforcement agencies to provide them with any information needed to help resolve the identity theft.  Be sure to know the difference between these frauds in order to know whom to contact to help you resolve these issues faster.

Remember, if your driver's license fraud is resolved, you will need to change your driver's license number.  Don't forget to notify banks, insurance companies, credit card agencies, and any other business that may have your old driver’s license number.  Do this immediately after receiving your new number to prevent any incidents with those businesses.
