Identity Theft Targeting Military
A recent article in the NY Times highlights details of how identity theft affects U.S. military personnel. Identity thieves target the military in unique ways:
Military personnel commonly use social security numbers as personally identifying information. They use their social security numbers on a routine basis whether filling out forms or performing some activity that requires a soldier to use identification to check something out. Apparently, this is a known issue in the military and steps are being taken to change the age old practice.
The article points out a second issue that military personnel face, which is how deployments can affect the time it takes to determine that identity theft has taken place and their ability to take action to stop and reverse the crime while stationed outside of the country. There have been steps taken to educate soldiers both of the issue and how to remain alert to the symptoms of identity theft while in the military.
