Why Indifference Isn't the Answer

It seems like a lot of media attention has been given to identity theft thanks to the eleven-person identity theft ring responsible for stealing 40 million credit or ATM card numbers. In my social circle this news has generated one of two responses: panic or indifference. Some people I know didn’t even know about the story (doesn’t anyone watch the evening news anymore?)

While panic isn’t the correct response, indifference isn’t the right way to react either. Identity theft is a real crime—and it truly is the fastest growing crime in America. Generally, 10 million people are affected by it a year. But that number might rise significantly due to security breaches like the one in the news this week. Talk to anyone who has had his or her identity stolen, and your indifference will disappear rather quickly.

With identity theft ever on the rise, your chance at your dream job, your dream home, your dream vacation, your dream of sending your children to college or even your dream of retiring someday can all be snatched from you in a matter of minutes. Yes, most cases of identity theft are generally resolved. But sometimes they still cost innocent people dearly along the way.

Imagine leaving the perfect job interview thinking you had the job in the bag only to later discover you were turned down because of negative (and fraudulent) history on your credit report? Or picture yourself making a solid offer on your dream home thinking you were going to beat out every other buyer only to be turned down for the loan because of your low credit rating (that wasn’t your fault). If those two things aren’t enough to make you sick to your stomach, envision yourself looking into the tear brimmed eyes of your teenage son or daughter and telling him or her you couldn’t secure the financing needed for a college education.

No, indifference is not the right response when we hear stories like the one that broke on Tuesday. Stories like that should serve as reminders that we live in an unsafe world and we need to make every effort to protect ourselves.

On the front page of www.identitytheft.com you will see a heading that says "Today’s Article". Beneath it is an article about what your correct response should be—and what you can do if you were one of the 40 million people whose information was stolen (not all 40 million of those people know they were victims yet). Please take the time to read it, and implement it. It could be the very thing that helps you save and achieve your dreams.

What an interesting article, obviously there are great discrepancies between these judicial systems… this makes me realize how relative everything is and that justice is an utopia.

Most of the credit card companies are doing that. I got a call from one company Amalgamated Bank of Chicago, ABOC, when I did a bit of charging on a weekend. They did actually call me, and asked me whether I had actually done the charges. They apologized, but I told them that I really appreciated it. Come to think of it, they are the only ones to do it.Online universities

Panic in not the answer to such issues. Because panic creates more problems for any person in hard condition and halts his searching process. online marketing business has taught us many things regarding identity theft which we are utilizing comprehensively in our newly established wireless broadband services. This not only help us facilitate our clients but also place us on the top of the internet service providers list.

This is a very depressing term. The indifference of the world. The fact that the world, on a whole, does not care about any of it and thus will not react. Really it's a great information. In future we expect that we will be getting this type of information regularly.

Thanks, Sarah, I think this was well written. My father was a victim of identity theft and I know that it took him several months before he was satisfied that his name was cleaned up. I firmly believe that with the Internet and online growth there is going to be continued threats on people's personal information. I actually believe that the Internet, in some form, will eventually be a larger target of terrorists. So, I do believe in id theft services whichever one an individual selects. I think it's important that we continue to educate the consumer and encourage feedback on this topic through a site like this.
