Street Gangs and Identity Theft
I live in a border state. California. Beautiful beaches, constant sunshine and a very high percentage of gang activity. But I live in the suburbs not the city, so I haven’t had to spend much time worrying about gang activity unless I have to travel into the city for work. Or, that used to be the case anyway.
Earlier this week a news story broke that said street gangs are the new face of identity theft. That’s right, the drug trafficking, gun wielding, tattooed types are now making their mark on what’s typically been known as a white collar crime. Those being investigated include a Long Beach chapter of the Crips, the Armenian Power gang and the Mexican Mafia (which operates mostly from prison).
Why do gangs want in on the action? Identity theft is apparently a rather easy crime to commit, and it offers a huge pay off for minimal effort. There’s less of a chance of getting caught and a lesser punishment for those who do get caught.
But there’s another side to the story that makes it even more interesting. Because these gangs are generally comprised of at least some members who are illegal immigrants the concept of identity theft is appealing to them because it allows them to garner social security numbers and paychecks (in the form of stolen money) for gang members who aren’t authorized to work in this country. They’ve got to steal to eat and they have to eat to live, so to speak.
Protecting yourself from gang related identity theft isn’t any different than protecting yourself from general identity theft (and we have numerous articles on that you can read). However the tie-in to illegal immigration does present us with another interesting option—especially in an election year.
With less than three months until the upcoming Presidential election, I plan to blog more about where both candidates stand when it comes to protecting consumers from identity theft at a federal level. But something for us to consider today is where each candidate stands when it comes to illegal immigration. There are illegal immigrants who have stolen identities (and been caught) who are still living in our country. Makes you care a little more about an issue you aren’t really passionate about doesn’t it?
I know illegal immigrants aren’t the only perpetrators of identity theft, but if this week’s news story teaches us anything it’s that we need to pay more attention to those who might need to steal our information. Desperate people do desperate things. But that doesn’t mean they should go unpunished.
So, what are we—the voters—going to do about it?

Identity Theft are like computer viruses that will attack unnoticed at first. By the time you noticed the crimes they did, you are left with a lot of troubles already. It is always a good idea to have online protection for us to have peace of mind. Identity theft cannot be stopped but they can be prevented if we are more careful and vigilant.

With how devastating identity theft is to the victim, why are the penalties so low? There really needs to be reform and change to the sentencing guidelines.

I believe this aspect is growing everywhere as business owners learn what it is. For example, Phoenix is much more sophisticated in this regards than here in Tucson. I average small business owner is still way behind in their understanding such incidents Costa Rica Real Estate
Oh, great, this is all we need. I live in LA and, like you, I live in a nice suburb and rarely think about the gang problems out here. And, btw, our Chief of Police is doing a great job of hunting them down. It does kind of make sense that they would be interested in identity theft...it results in a financial payday and, most concerning as you pointed out, the punishment is not as tough as a lot of other crimes. When is identity theft punishment going to get tougher? That's really what needs to happen.
